# What are traits?

Traits are any property you might use in a dice roll. An Attribute is a trait, a Skill is a trait, a Specialty is a (1-dot) trait, and even a Discipline is a trait.

When you create your character, **Inconnu** asks you for the ratings for all your Skills and Attributes and, in the case of vampires, your Blood Potency. These traits may be updated if they change later (or you made a mistake during the creation process), and you may add (or delete) new traits as suits your fancy.

**Universal Traits**

The following traits are universal across all characters: `willpower`, `humanity`, `surge`, `potency`, and `hunger`. You may not create traits with the same name, nor may you delete them. You can, however, use them in rolls, and their values automatically update based on your character's stats.
{% endhint %}
